Rhetorical Analysis: APOK

I know, it's not the "I Have a Dream" speech, but not everyone is Dr. King, but people make speeches all of the time for different reasons that can be inspiring (or not, depending on how you interpret each message).

For your initial response: determine the Audience, Purpose and Occasion for the following video, and then note whether or not Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech, and how he uses the elements you identify. Finally, say whether or not you think he was effective in his speech, and why (ex. how did he format his speech to help build his logos or ethos? How could he have better formatted his speech and why?).

In your reply: ask your classmate a question about his/her post regarding his/her thought-process regarding one or more of the determinations he/she makes (ex. "Do you really think his audience was the people sitting at the Teen Choice Awards or were they the people sitting at home?).

  1. (A) Kutcher’s audience is the people at the Teen Choice awards but also all of the people watching at home. He is mostly trying to reach the young people who are watching and listening. (P) Kutcher’s purpose is to inspire young people to reach for their full potential. (O) Kutcher is speaking at the Teen Choice Awards where he is being honored with the “Ultimate Choice Award”. He thanks the audience because “he doesn’t have a career without them. He doesn’t get to do anything that he gets to do without them”.
    (K) Kutcher’s ethos in his argument is revealing “insider secrets in Hollywood”. He is famous therefore the information he is going to impart is important. He further identifies with the audience by telling them that his “name isn’t really even Ashton”. His logos is all of the things he shares about his personal life are true but also appeal to the audience emotionally.
Kutcher uses pathos when he discusses his first jobs which all happen to be menial jobs that don’t sound very glamorous. He additionally points out that he was never better than any of these jobs but was very grateful for each one. He also breaks down the reality that “opportunity looks like work” meaning you have to work to get there. Nothing is just going to happen for you without putting in the work first.
Kutcher also reveals that he thinks that “the sexiest thing in the entire world is being being really smart, thoughtful and generous. Everything else is crap.”
His parting comment: “Build a life. Don’t live one, build one. Find your opportunities. And always be sexy.”
I thought this speech was very well formatted. Kutcher drew the audience in by sharing personal information about himself. Then he gave them guidelines that he thought were important. The speech was conversational with an inspirational tone and did not leave you feeling like he was preaching but more that he was trying to inspire you to action. I don't think it should be changed at all.

    1. Do you really think that he was trying to inspire young people to reach their full potential it seems that he was trying to share what he believed to be the best way to handle opportunities that worked for him, what do you think?

    2. I think that Mr.Kutcher was sharing his life experiences to show mainly young adults, that we all could have a life of our own, if we just take chances. It worked for him and it could work for you. His position allows him to share his life and for many young people to listen. It was a great opportunity and he used to inspire others. I agree with you, that his speech was well organized with a great purpose. He accomplished his intentions to relay his emotions to other to emulate him.

  2. Audience: Mr. Kutcher is speaking to the kids in the audience and at watching at home, particularly older teens who are facing the challenge of defining themselves and becoming independent adults.

Purpose: He wants to give his audience the benefit of his experience to help them in this transitional phase of their lives.

Occasion: He has just recieved the Ultimate Choice Award, the Teen Choice equivalent of a lifetime achievement award.

Ethos: He starts off by connecting with the audience through self-effacing humor, attributing his success to their support, and saying that he learned these important lessons when he was a teen himself. The fact that he is receiving the award gives him the credibility to speak about what it takes to be successful.

Logos: He uses a logical argument from his experience to support hard work as opportunity. He also makes a great logical appeal with a quote from Steve Jobs, who was considered to be extremely successful,"everything around us, that we call life, was made up by people no smarter than you."

Pathos: The unorthodox definition he gives sexy appeals to emotion, as does his argument that the standard definition is a sort of marketing trick that should be avoided. His tone throughout the speech and choice of words seem to be designed to inspire a feeling of empowerment and self-worth.

Analysis: His Speech seemed to have a tone and format similar to a high school commencement address. The use of the word sexy is a great way to emphasize the importance of intelligence, thoughtfulness, and generosity, but I think that some parents might object to the word, as it normally pertains to attracting people for sex. He does a great job of connecting with the audience without being patronizing or trying to act like a teen himself. Over all, I believe the speech was effective.

  3. About Ashton Kutcher, he was born February 7, 1978 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He is an American Actor, Producer, and model since 1998 to present.
Audience: His audience are young teenagers at the teen awards show. also young adults watching the show and many adults to include parents and politicians.
Purpose: The purpose of his speech was to send a an excellent message to young adults about opportunity, and hard work.
Occasion: To awake all young people about life, to take any opportunity and do something with it, be sexy with a different meaning: smart, thoughful, generous and to look at opportunity just like work.
Kutcher uses ethos, logos and pathos in his speech: and how he uses the elements you identify... Uses ethos credibility based on his own life experiences. He had a tough begining to include his sick brother, parents divorce, and he also made some mistakes growing up, to include getting in trouble with the police. He uses logos (evidence) his own life again is a solid evidence of what you can accomplish regardless of where you start, is always up to you. He uses pathos by placing himself iin the speech, he lived throuth it and was able to place his feelings to show the audience his commitment to always be generous, work hard to accomplish your goals, and to build your own life.
His speech was very effective; he is an important idol in many young adults life, they listen to him and want to be like him. So yes it was very effective. His speech was excellent, some politicians and talk show hosts mentioned that it was a remakable, uplifting, motivational, and inspirational speech.

  4. Audience: Chris Ashton Kutcher's Audience in my opinion, was literally the people at the teens choice awards but it could also be applied to anyone able to listen to his speech because of how broad the general message is.
Purpose: The purpose of the speech was to send a message to people about the three things he learned being Chris Kutcher "opportunity, being sexy, and living life;" which in my opinion seems to be a sort of metaphor for the lessons he learned when he was growing up on how he handled opportunity, values, and hard work while explaining each point and giving a sort description of his past.
Occasion: He was been given an award at the teens choice awards he decides to share with his audience the "secrets of Hollywood" and challenges the audience to apply these secrets and to never give up.
Ethos: Kutcher is a very well known and successful actor so if there was someone to listen to about success in Hollywood or in life he would be one to listen to.
Logos: The points he brings up are values that he learned during his life and if his ethos is enough to show that it was turned out well for him in the end, what brings the actors speech down to earth is the fact that in the begging he believes himself to be a fraud for his name and stating that he was an average human being like everyone else putting the audience and himself on the same playing field for the rest of the speech.
Pathos: In the way he words his speech it is very clear that he is reaching for the younger audience members for most of the speech saying things like "sexy" and "crap," and focusing his story on a much more younger version of himself constantly learning and never being the best at what he did, a mentality of some one striving for more opportunities and answers.
Finally: I believe that his speech is pretty effective I myself do not know of Ashton Kutcher as much as others but the name is renowned and familiar so knowing how he felt about is roots and what he valued is a great show of character for some one so famous, also the lessons he talks about are very applicable to my and every ones everyday life making it ring all the louder to people that these are lessons that should be treasured.

  5. Audience are young teens and adults, Purpose is to address his identity in the film career, the occasion is during his spotlight at the Teen Choice Awards. He uses logos, ethos, and pathos to give his speech. His credibility as a actor, the logic behind becoming a celebrity, and the way he speaks and his gestures during his speech give off the pathos vibe. I think his speech was effective because he laid out a foundation of examples leading up to his success in life and the message he presented about being smart. I also think the teen girls in this video are hella annoying.

    1. I agree with how you said his speech was effective. However, while he was giving his speech, what made it come off as giving off a pathos vibe?

    2. Do you think the purpose of his speech is really to address his identity in the film career? Or is it more to speak on who he was before his film career and the lessons he learned in that time?

  7. Audience: Kutcher’s audiences are the young people sitting at the award show and the children and young adults who watched the award show at home.
Purpose: Kutcher’s purpose of his speech was to inspire his audience to live their life to the fullest because they have the potential to be or do anything.
Occasion: The occasion of the speech was at the Teen Choice Awards after Kutcher was awarded “The Ultimate Choice Awards”.
Ethos: Kutcher’s credibility is the fact that he is a well-known actor who has had success in many Hollywood movies and TV shows.
Logos: Kutcher uses logic in his speech by providing his prior workforce experience before coming an actor. For instance, he worked by sweeping the floors of a factory or in a grocery store deli. He never quit a job before he had the next one. Also, he used logos by quoting Steve Jobs.
Pathos: He appealed to pathos by using the word “sexy” not in form of appealing to the opposite sex, but by explaining it as being smart and thoughtfulness. Also, his tone throughout the whole speech was to motivate the up-coming generation to do great things.
Analysis: Watching his speech, Kutcher emphasized the main point to his audience in a nice way. He appealed to ethos, logos, and pathos throughout. The structure of his speech was nicely done, starting with telling the audience his real name is Chris and going into his childhood and how that affected him. Then taking in his past, it can inspire other people to go out into the world and achieve greatness. Finally he ended with telling the audience “The world was created by people no smarter than you.”. His tone was very inspirational and uplifting. Overall I believed his speech was effective.

    1. Do you think that the purpose of Kutcher's speech might be more specific than living life to the fullest? Could it be that he was giving specific advice, based on his experiences before he became so successful?

  8. Ashton Kutcher is speaking at the Teen choice awards and those watching at home.
Purpose: He starts out by telling us his real name. Which was Chris not Ashton. Ashton was or is his middle name. He continues to tell the audience his work experience.
Occasion: He was just presented with the Ultimate Choice Award.
Ethos: he starts off Thanking the Audience that he would not be there if it weren't for them., and that he learned 3 amazing guidelines. 1 being Opportunity -which he sums up as it looks like hard work. He talks about his work experience from an early age and never quitting a job until is already lined up and all his jobs are just stepping stones toward the future.
2nd is that being sexy: being very smart, thoughtful and generous and the 3rd one is living life. don't just live life build your life. make memories. and have fun.
Logos: he mentions working habits. and I like the quote from the late Steve Jobs everything around us that we call live is made up of people no smarter than you".
Pathos: he talks about being sexy ( very smart)
his speech was well rehearsed, well thought off. well laid out, it ever toughed me. I believe it was very effective for those young and older. He started out telling us a little about him and how he matured (grew up) and how he explained his 3 core values for which the teens can adapt and learn for time so that they can build their life.
His speech was perfect and I would not change a thing.

  9. Audience- the audience of the speech would definitely be Ashton Kutchers fans possibly even the youth.
Purpose- The purpose of his speech was to encourage his crowd to succeeding by being smart, or gaining as much knowledge as possible. With this approach ethos we used, he gave examples from his upbringing and how it got him to where he was in life.
Occasion- The occasion of his speech was in honor of accepting his teen choice award.
In the speech Kutcher used all three of ethos pathos and logos. By giving a brief description about the road to his success, he eased his audience in by relation. He pretty much revealed things in his life in hoping to gain a common ground and to inspire his audience with the use of ethos- he is credible for his own personal experiences. During his speech, through his tone and what was said, illustrates the use of Pathos. After telling his audience a brief synopsis as to how he got where he was at in life and providing great words of encouragement like to be smart, can illustrate logos. It was logical for him to come in telling the audience a little bit about himself, and then relating to his crowd to eventually, pretty much say if I can do it you can do it! For the occasion and the amount of time that was given, I think Ashton Kutcher did a good job with getting his point across.

  10. Audience: Ashton (Chris) is speaking to not only the fans in the audience, but more to the wider audience of viewers at home on their couches. He is trying to reach those who look up to him.

Purpose: The purpose of his speech is to point out and make it clear that fame is not what defines success. He makes a point of showing that the most valuable lessons he learned in life were learned when he went by Chris, a normal teenager. He is trying to show that life is about working hard in any job one may hold, no matter how difficult or crappy. He points out specifically that he was not better than any job he had. He stresses not quitting. He also tries to show young people that, opposite of the Hollywood view of sexy, true beauty lies in intelligence and the way people treat each other. He encourages the young people listening to him not to be fooled by the ideals of others, not to take others ideas and plans for themselves, but to create the lives they want for themselves and strive to live those lives to the fullest.

Occasion: While giving his acceptance speech at the Teen Choice Awards, Ashton has a platform to speak to thousands of viewers. He is able to reach anyone watching the show and instead of a self gratifying speech about his career and how awesome he is, he uses that platform to say something meaningful to the youth of America.

Kind: Although he does begin by stating his position as a Hollywood insider, I feel his ethos come more from his relating to the youth as someone who was just a normal teenager with normal jobs, goals, and opportunities. This enables him to connect with his audience as a person who understands where they are in life, rather than someone who grew up privileged with no responsibilities. He speaks on opportunities as one who took every opportunity he could and ran with it and can therefore encourage young people to do the same. The speech itself is full of pathos. It speaks to the heart of problems and insecurities that teenagers face everyday; being sexy (smart) and living the lives that they want, not that someone else lays out ahead of them.

His argument was successful in my opinion. If I was a teenager I would have paid attention. He used the specific buzzword sexy. Also, by laying his speech out in three sections, he left his viewers waiting to see how he would explain those three points. I feel that had he started with sexy being smart, generous, thoughtful, he would have lost some of the audience there, but he started with opportunity and working hard in any job one holds. This helped hold attention. I do not think he could have formatted it much better for the group of people to whom he was speaking.
