Synthesis

Initial Post (November 20th): To practice for your final paper, pick one of the theses (how desire leads to education or how education leads to desire), and list ONE reason, at least two pieces of evidence (quote or paraphrase) from different sources, and your analysis of how the two relate to your thesis.

Example:

Thesis: Desire leads to education

Reason: In an effort to succeed in school, often times students will sacrifice personal relationships for their education.
Evidence 1.1: Hooks separated herself from the seemingly frivilous desires of her white roommates at her first college and, instead, "lived in the world of books" (1).
Evidence 1.2: "I devoted myself entirely to my studies. I became bookish, puzzling to all my family. Ambition set me apart" (Rodriguez 17).
Analysis: Hooks and Rodriguez both distanced themselves from interpersonal bonds in favor of their book world, which helped focus their desire for education.

Reply to classmate (Due November 22nd): give your classmate a quote that might help them to further prove their Reason or to fulfill their analysis.

Example:

What about using, "[Stanford] was the place for me to go--a place where intellect was valued over foolish fun and games and dress up" (hooks 2) as one piece of evidence to support your final analysis?

DO NOT just tell your classmate s/he did a good job with his/her post.

    1. You might try this quote from Malcolm X Paragraph 10: "I was so fascinated that I went on--I copied the dictionaries next page. And the same experience came when I studied that. With every succeeding page, I also learned of people and places and events from history."

How this relates to desire leading to education. Malcolm was fascinated by the new bits of information he had learned from books that he continues to feed his curiosity with more learning and reading.

  2. Reason: In the search of an excape of the current stress or adversaty of life education becomes the outlet for many people wich then turns into a desire of knowledge .
Evidence 1.1: "That knowledge, however, did not weaken amition. Instead, it strengthened resolve." (Rodriguez, 20)
Evidence 1.2: "We did not reside on the same planet. I lived in the world of books" (hooks, 1)
Analysis: Both hooks and Rodriguez seek a sort of sanctuary in their quest for knowledge, then afterwords it leads them to desire more knowledge.

    1. "My earliest teachers, the nuns, made my success their ambition".(Rodriguez 2) I like this quote because somebody else made it their goal to believe in you.

  3. Thesis: Education leads to Desire

Reason: Students who take the time to explore the academic successes and educational value of their learning often lead themselves to new and diverse opportunities in life.

Evidence 1.1: "As I see it today, the ability to read awoke inside me some long dormant craving to be mentally alive."(Malcolm X 41)

Evidence 1.2:"I hoarded the pleasures of learning."(Rodriguez 21)

Analysis: Malcolm and Rodriguez both educated themselves and later made them desire something in the end. Malcolm desired more learning from different aspects of the world and culture around him while Rodriguez desired respect for his parents.

  4. Thesis: Desire leads to education

Reason: In a vigorous attempt to do well in school, frequently learners will abandon their family ties for an opportunity to continue learning.

Evidence: 1.1 Hooks decided to move away from her roots when she clearly stated her intentions to attend Stanford University against her family's disapproval. "Cost" (3).

Evidence: 1.2 At the end of my schooling, I needed to determine how far I had moved from my past (Rodriquez 17).

Analysis: Both Hooks and Rodriquez detached from their families, to concentrate all efforts toward the desire for education.

    1. I also like the quote "One of my English Professors had attended Stanford University. She felt that was the place for me to go --a place where intellect was valued over foolish fun and games and dress up, and finding a husband did not overshadow academic work" (hooks 11).

  5. Thesis: desire leads to education.

Reason: Students often desire an education to break free from a limited or closed family view of the world.

Evidence 1.1 "my parents would have been shocked to learn that I could like such a book in the same way they liked Dickens" (Lu 995)

Evidence 1.2 "Mama brought the message back that my father had absolutely refused to give permission" (hooks 3)

Analysis: Lu and hooks were both discouraged by their families to learn freely and abundantly, which fueled their personal desire to be more educated.

    1. Are you sure that your evidence from Lu supports this reason? It would seem that her parents' disagreed with the Marxist philosophy but otherwise encouraged her to become more educated.

    2. Another fitting quote could be from Rodriguez, " A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that... schooling was changing me and separating me from the life I enjoyed before I became a student... At the end of my schooling, I needed to determine how far I had moved from my past."

  6. Thesis: Desire leads to education
Reason: Students are often ashamed of their home life while growing up, which leads them to work hard investing in their education.
Evidence 1.1: “With every award, each graduation from one level of education to the next, people I’d meet would congratulate me” (Rodriguez 16).
Evidence 1.2. “I was more intensely pleased on this occasion, however because suddenly I felt that my family language had been singled out from the family languages of my classmates” (Lu 990-991).
Analysis: Lu and Rodriguez came from families they were not particularly proud of, thus giving them a reason to excel further in their education.

  7. Desire leads to education.

A person needs a reason to pursue an education.

Evidence 1.1 Malcolm X writes that he found it difficult to articulate his meaning in standard English for his letters to Elijah Muhammad, but he didn't think that the colloquialisms he was fluent in would be an appropriate substitute (1001)

Evidence 1.2 Rodriguez tells us how he cherished his parents' approval and coveted the awards his siblings acquired at school.

Analysis: Though Rodriguez's goals are more concrete and external, and Malcolm X's are more immaterial and internal, both needed an impetus to take education seriously.

  8. Thesis: Desire leads to education

Reason: The desire to elevate yourself from your family or class boundaries can lead to education.

Evidence 1.1 "At the end of my schooling, I needed to determine how far I had moved from my past" (Rodriquez 7).

Evidence 1.2 "Uncertain about whether I had managed to make it through without giving up the best of myself, the best values I had been raised to believe in - hard work, honesty, and respect for everyone no matter their class - I finished my education with my allegiance to the working class intact" (hooks 32).

Analysis: Rodriguez and Hooks both maintained the value systems that they were raised with even when the easier path might have been to conform to the values around them.

    1. Another good quote that would help your thesis: "(How did I manage my success)" Has taken him over 20 years to admit. "A primary reason for my success in the classroom was that I couldn't forget that schooling was changing me and separating from the life I enjoyed before becoming a student".

  9. Thesis: Education leads to desire.
Reason: Obtaining an education often leads students to realize their need for recognition and approval from a figure of authority who understands the value of gaining knowledge.
Evidence 1.1: "It was the nun's encouragement that mattered most to me" (Rodriguez 20).
Evidence 1.2: Because of Lu's ability to speak English, her second grade homeroom teacher singled her out and asked her in English to run an errand for her. Although Lu spoke English with her family a home, this special attention in her classroom, where only Standard Chinese was allowed, made her feel "intensely pleased" and validated the education she had received at home (990-991).
Analysis: As their educations took off, both Rodriguez and Lu began to seek the approval of their teachers. It led them to work hard to succeed in school in order to receive more of the recognition they grew to desire.

  10. Thesis: Desire leads to education

When you have words in your head that needs to be put on paper but you don't know how or what words mean what you are truly trying to say.

Evidence 1.1 "I became so frustrated at not being able to express what I wanted to Convey in letters that I wrote,".(Malcolm x 1)

Evidence 1.2 "I had identified the differences between home and the outside world by the different languages." "I learned to speak with my parents, Shanghai dialect only with the servants, and the Standard Chinese, the official written language of New China" (Min-Zhan LU 2)

Malcolm X and MIN-ZHAN LU both had a desire to speak. Malcolm X was in reading and writing trying to convey his true feeling. and MIN-ZHAN LU wanted to speak to speak to those around her. The both had a drive or desire to accomplish this at what ever cost.

    1. All three of your quotes were great for your reason. You could also use this one.
"The more suspicious I became about the way I read and wrote, the more guilty I felt for losing the spontaneity with which I had learned to 'use' these 'languages' (Lu 996).
By using this quote you could explain how Lu had a desire to speak, but was feeling guilty for the language she had to choose.
